IL-23 alpha, a crucial component, combines with IL12B to create the IL-23 interleukin, a heterodimeric cytokine pivotal in innate and adaptive immunity. Operating in peripheral tissues, IL-23, along with IL-17, responds acutely to infections. It binds to IL12RB1 and IL23R, activating Jak-Stat signaling, preferentially stimulating memory T-cells, and inducing pro-inflammatory cytokines. Released by antigen-presenting cells, IL-23 plays a role in autoimmune inflammation, contributing to autoimmune diseases and tumorigenesis, and supports the expansion of T-helper 17 cells.
