The GRE3 protein is an aldose reductase that reduces the cytotoxic compound methylglyoxal (MG) to acetol and (R)-lactaldehyde, especially under stress conditions. MG is synthesized from dihydroxyacetone phosphate and is involved in cell cycle regulation and stress adaptation.
